Beginnings: Uniondale was long a part of the great Hempstead Plains, the prairie that stretched across what is now central Nassau and was used as common pasture land after the English arrived in the 1640s. But the portion that became Uniondale has a lengthy military history. It was an enlistment center during the Revolution, an infantry training center during the War of 1812 and a camp during the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I. The establishment of Mitchel Field on its northern edge grew into an Army Air Corps base during World War II and an Air Force base until 1961. The community itself, however, consisted mostly of modest farms for three centuries. It was known first as Turtle Hook, because of the turtles that crawled out of nearby ponds to sun themselves on a bend - or ``hook'' - in the road between the plains and Roosevelt. In 1853, residents decided Turtle Hook was an ``unsuitable'' name and changed it to Uniondale. There is no record of why that name was chosen.

Turning Point: Mitchel Field was the catalyst that spurred Uniondale's change from a farming community to a suburban one, particularly after World War II. Many members of the military lived in Uniondale when they were based at Mitchel Field, and so did civilians who worked there. (Unlike Levittown and many other postwar suburbs, Uniondale opened its doors to minority residents early, and as a result its population has been more diverse than that of most other Long Island communities.) Mitchel Field's closing in 1961 also contributed to Uniondale's substantial commercial development.
